M1-R5.1 — IT Tools and Network Basics is the first module of NIELIT O Level, and the one most students take lightly. It looks easy — computers, Windows, Writer, Calc, the internet — but it is broad: nine chapters, and the questions are spread across all of them. Students who skip two chapters because they look boring lose the marks that would have given them a better grade.
This page gives you 45 important M1 MCQ questions with answers — five from each of the nine chapters — and a one-line explanation for every answer, so you learn why an option is right, not just which letter to mark. When you finish, you can take a free M1-R5 online test: 10 full sets of 50 questions in 45 minutes, graded on the NIELIT S–F scale.
These questions come from our M1 chapter-wise MCQ question bank in the Study Zone, and every answer was checked by hand. Where MS Office and LibreOffice behave differently, we kept only the questions that are true for LibreOffice — because that is what the M1 syllabus uses.
Zed-King Group of Institute, Kaithal is a NIELIT Study Centre (ACCR-O3292) under the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India, teaching O Level since 2006.
What This Page Covers
Item | Detail |
|---|---|
Module | M1-R5.1 — Information Technology Tools and Network Basics |
Chapters | 9 (Computer basics, OS, Writer, Calc, Impress, Internet, E-mail & e-Governance, Digital Payments, Future Skills) |
MCQs on this page | 45 — 5 per chapter, with answer and explanation |
Practical paper for this module | PR-1 (LibreOffice Writer, Calc and Impress on a computer) |
Passing marks | 50% in the module, separately from the practical |
Free online test | 10 sets × 50 questions, 45 minutes, instant result with explanations |
How to Use These 45 Questions
Cover the answer line with your hand or a piece of paper and choose an option first. Reading the answer straight away feels like learning, but it is not.
Read the explanation even when you were right. Many M1 questions are written differently in the exam; the explanation is what lets you answer the new wording.
Mark the chapters where you got 2 or more wrong. Those are the chapters to open in the notes first.
Then take a timed test. Knowing 45 answers at your own pace is not the same as 50 questions against a clock.
Chapter-wise Weight — Why You Cannot Skip a Chapter
Our M1 question bank has 500 questions, and they are split almost exactly evenly across the nine chapters — about 55 each. That matches how the M1 paper behaves: there is no single "important chapter" that carries the module.
Chapter | Topic | What is asked most |
|---|---|---|
1 | Introduction to Computer | Input/output devices, memory types, software types |
2 | Operating System | OS functions, Windows features, files and folders |
3 | LibreOffice Writer | Formatting, tables, bullets, shortcuts, mail merge |
4 | LibreOffice Calc | Cell address, functions, sorting, filtering, charts |
5 | LibreOffice Impress | Views, transitions, animations, slide show keys |
6 | Internet & WWW | IP/MAC/URL/DNS, browsers, network devices, topology |
7 | E-mail, Social Networking & e-Governance | E-mail folders and features, social media terms, government services |
8 | Digital Financial Tools | UPI, NEFT/RTGS/IMPS, QR codes, net banking, RBI/NPCI |
9 | Future Skills & Cyber Security | AI, Big Data, Blockchain, Cloud, VR/AR, 3D printing, cyber safety |
Chapters 3, 4 and 5 count twice: they are a third of the theory paper and the whole of the PR-1 practical. An hour spent in LibreOffice is an hour spent on both papers.

5 Mistakes That Cost Marks in M1
Preparing on MS Office only. The syllabus is LibreOffice. Menus and a few shortcuts differ — for example, a triple-click in Writer selects a sentence, not a paragraph.
Skipping Chapters 7, 8 and 9 because they feel like general knowledge. They are a third of the chapters, and their questions are short and scoring.
Mixing up look-alike terms — RAM and ROM, IP and MAC address, transition and animation, NEFT and RTGS. Most wrong answers in M1 are one of these pairs.
Reading notes without testing yourself. Recognising an answer when you read it is much easier than picking it from four options.
Ignoring PR-1 until the last week. The practical has to be cleared at 50% on its own, and Writer, Calc and Impress need hands-on practice.

A Simple 2-Week Plan for M1
Days 1–3: Chapters 1, 2 and 6 (computer basics, OS, internet). Short chapters with many definition questions.
Days 4–8: Chapters 3, 4 and 5 on a computer, in LibreOffice. Do one PR-1 task every day along with the MCQs.
Days 9–11: Chapters 7, 8 and 9. One page of notes per chapter is enough — these reward clear definitions.
Days 12–14: one full M1 online test every day. After each test, read the explanation of every wrong answer and open that chapter again.
A score of 85% or more gives you an S grade. Aim for it in M1 — it is the most achievable S in the whole of O Level.
